Advent Devotion, Day 12
December 12th
“For a child will be born for us, a son will be given to us, and the government will be on his shoulders…” – Isaiah 9:6
"The Government Will Be Upon His Shoulders"
That's quite a phrase, isn't it?
These promising words from Isaiah 9:6 speaks of Christ’s ultimate reign and authority. The "government" refers not so much to a mere political power but to the overarching rule of Christ in all aspects of life—spiritual, moral, and societal. The weight of the world’s needs, the burden of justice, and the reconciliation of humanity with God will all rest on Him.
This is a wonderful promise of a righteous rule!
In a world where governments often fail to bring true justice and peace, this prophecy is a promise of a different kind of ruler—one who will reign with perfect wisdom, justice, and compassion. Jesus, the Child born in Bethlehem, is the fulfillment of this prophecy. He is the one who will establish a kingdom of righteousness, a kingdom where peace, love, and justice reign.
Isaiah emphasizes that the government is on His shoulders and that's so important for us to note. He alone can bear the full weight of the world’s brokenness, corruption, and injustice. His shoulders are broad enough to carry all the burdens of humanity. He is not just a king in the way that earthly rulers are; He is a King who bears the burdens of His people with love and compassion.
When Isaiah describes the Messiah as the "Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.", he is revealing that the nature of the government that is upon His shoulders is not distant or detached, but deeply personal and intimately involved with His people.
Personal Reflection:
How does the "government" mentioned in Isaiah 9:6 differ from human forms of government?
How might the promise of eternal peace influence Christian views on justice, war, and conflict resolution in contemporary society?
What does the phrase "on his shoulders" suggest about the nature of leadership and responsibility in God’s kingdom? How might this influence our understanding of leadership in both religious and secular contexts?
Prayer Prompt:
Pray today for the coming of this great King and Kingdom!
